Dandruff is a problem so common that it that can affect anyone.  It is usually encountered from young adulthood until middle age. People who have oily hair and scalp are prone to dandruff.  Since men have larger oil producing glands in their scalp, they are more likely to have dandruff than females.  A poor diet that is lacking in zinc, vitamin B or certain kinds of fats also contribute to having dandruff. The worst case of dandruff usually occurs during cold months while the condition improves during warm months.

Mild cases can easily be treated with regular anti-dandruff shampoos while the more stubborn cases need to be treated with medicated shampoos.   On top of regular cleansing with your anti-dandruff shampoo, you may reduce your risk of developing dandruff through the following regimen:

  1. Manage your stress. Stress affects our health in more ways than we can think of.  When we get stressed we become vulnerable to diseases and unhealthy skin conditions.  Sometimes it even triggers dandruff or worsens its condition.
  2. Observe proper hygiene.  A clean body helps prevent diseases and a clean scalp prevents dandruff.  People who have oily scalp should shampoo at least once a day to reduce oil build-up and dandruff formation.
  3. Maintain a healthy diet. Eat balanced meals every day, simply follow the recommended dietary requirement of your food pyramid and you’re all set.
  4. Go outdoors.  Spend a little time in the sun. Sunlight may be good in controlling your dandruff.  Just make sure you protect your skin with sunscreen.
  5. Let your natural beauty shine.  Avoid or minimize use of styling products like hair sprays, styling gels, mousses etc.  These products can cause dirt or chemical build-up on your hair and scalp making it more oily.

Treatment for skin ailments is something that we shouldn’t take for granted. It doesn’t stop at taking the prescribed medication by our dermatologist we also have to look at our habits and take steps to improve it for a healthy skin, healthy body and healthy life.
